CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT
The Centre of Excellence in Sports Management is established with the goal to develop leaders in the sports industry through education, research and collaboration. The global sports industry is estimated to be around $600 billion contributing around 0.5 per cent of the world GDP (it ranges to even 5 per cent in some countries) whereas in India it contributes only 0.1 per cent of the GDP. (Sujay Chaturvedi, 2019). The sports industry in India got a fillip in the last decade with the formation and success of various leagues such as the IPL, ISL and PKL. The heightened level of interest in different sports in India across every generation is a harbinger of hope. The increase in media viewership fuelled by enormous consumer demand is an indicator of a bright future for the sports industry in India. Another indicator of a rapidly growing sports industry is the Government of India’s thrust on grassroot development and initiatives like the Fit India movement. A report titled “The business of sports’ released in 2016 by KPMG states “The vastness of India’s sports sector and association with several other industries such as education, real estate, infrastructure, tourism, manufacturing and retail, makes it extremely attractive”. There is a huge untapped potential in the business of sports in India and the Centre of Excellence will promote initiatives that will help India to develop business leaders in the sports ecosystem.
